Community engagement & empowerment through sport
Location: Mitchells Plain, Cape Town
Mitchells Plain based 32km from the city of Cape Town, it is one of South Africa’s largest townships. Local residents are plagued by crime, gangsterism and drug addiction. Out of a population of 310,485 only 28% will have successfully completed secondary education.
Many people, young and old within these communities are vulnerable and at risk with poor housing, little stability or employment opportunities. People living in these communities often have highly complex needs related in the main to poverty.
ACN SA have a strong partnership with Keith Meyer who runs MITS, Making an Impact Through Sport, an NGO organisation, based in Mitchells Plain that empowers community members using sport and physical activity to try and address some of these issues
ACN SA have delivered accredited and non-accredited training to capacity build local coaches to work within their own communities. It is important to expose coaches to a range of ages and settings. ACN SA are passionate about working across the age ranges, looking after mental and physical health is a key role of a community coach. Loneliness and isolation among older members of the communities is a huge problem and many of the younger coaches we train deliver fun, inclusive sessions to an over 50s group ranging from bootcamp and spinning to yoga and pilates.
We are looking for a corporate partner who can support a range of health and wellbeing initiatives within this community, as well as develop the next generation of coaches who can deliver inclusive sports sessions and provide support and pathways to all members of the community.
